'86, 5000...

The Rear-Main seal... I'm going to get the All-data printout from the shop today, but has anyone (I'm sure someone has) BTDT?

Is this one of those nightmares you hear about replacing with these cars? I think I may have found my occasional oil-problem....

Easy.......... once you get the trans out.

Never done that on a 5k auto before. Depending on whether you have a lift or not it might be easier to pull the engine.

since it's a non-Q, i'd pull the tranny, less lines and stuff. just undo the axles and the lower control arms and put a block of wood between the struts and the frame rails to keep them out. then start undoin' the rest.

have fun :D

Yeah, The lift makes stuff a lot easier, no doubt about that... Well I'm glad it doesn't seem like something that'll be a nightmare.

Uh, yeah. Now that D mentions it, (I was assuming you had a Q) you will likely find it easier to drop the trans out.
While you got that trans out, why not just throw in a 5 speed? You'll be glad you did.

Haha, 'oh boy, if I had a dollar every time I heard that... You'd be seeing my ass in an RS6...

See, I got my automatic 5k for $400.00. I would kill, (Get that?) for a manual, but i've put WAYY too much work (and money) into this thing. As for the manual swap? Very few people I know of have actually done it, I'd heard you have to pound out the tunnel, and wiring scares the hell out of me. (Plus, I rarely see 5k's with Manuals, and FWD)

I can french in tailights.... Transmissions? Damn, I don't know.

Oh if only it were a manual.

Thanks for the help though... you guys are really cool.

Just get the shift mechanism, then you could pull the 'box from a FWD 4k, no? I thought they shared the same 'boxes (maybe only quattro).

FWD 4k is almost always a 4 cyl. That trans won't work. Don't know a lot about trannies, but have been told that the 5k and Coupe use the same trans internals. As the non Q Coupes have a 5 cyl, that isn't surprising.
Hopefully someone who knows both cars well will chime in here. I'm not sure if the 5k and Coupe use the same shift mechanism, so parts may have to be changed there.

you could just use a 2wd 80/90 trans and prolly the shifter mechanism from a 100 with the 01a since it should have the same style shifter linkage....at least i would imagine so :P don't forget you'll need the pedal cluster and clutch master and line. you'll prolly need to cut the hole out for the master, but it shouldn't be too terribly hard.

The transmission you want to get is the FWD version of the 016 from the 5kt, kinda rear though, strongest of them all. Otherwise, the 012 from othe 80/90 series should work out ok with linkage tweaks.

The 093 from the C/CGT is not 016 based, nor does it share the same internals. It has 013 and 014 internals for the most part (those are the VW Fox 'boxes and 4cyl manual 'boxes).

Hmm.."kinda rear" Make that Kinda Rare.

Anyway, yeah, FWD 016 with the Type44 linkage or the 012 w/mod'd linkage (hell, the Type44/4A's 01A linkage MAY just work Derek!) is the way to go. I wouldn't mess with an 013/014 internal 'box unless you know it'll take it. But seeing as though they are backing typically 4cyl engines, chances are the clutch is small (220 or 228mm, not the 240 the 016 uses and the 012 can use), and the internals are weaker. If others know differently, please feel free to correct...
