Anyone know how low the 7" spring will be, I want the car to be pretty low, Cause QA1 springs only have 7" and the Eibach's have a bunch of 6" springs

Depends on your adjustment and spring rate ;D

So I guess my point is that nobody can tell you how low it will be because you have ~3" of height adjustment via the coilover.

When welding the rings that the springs sit on to the shock body, is there any risk of burning through to where the gas is? Is this a potential hazard or is there a couple layers of metal there.

your sapposed to take the shock out of the tube, but I was wondering the same thing about getting too much penetration and not being able to get the strut back in.

you do not burn thru and make a mess of things. controlled welding..... piece of cake.

and yes you pull the strut insert out first.

Gotcha. I've never had one apart so I wasn't sure if you were welding directly to the gas strut or not. Thanks for the insight.

So, which springs (length and rate) are people using for their daily drivers that result in a firm yet comfortable ride?

I haven't run this yet but I'm going 300f/325r 8" Spring all around. Should be firm but not too stiff I"m hoping. I ran 10" Springs in 325f/275r on mly 4000q and it was totally livable as a daily driver. I want a little more tail happiness though hence the inversion this time around. And with 10" Springs I couldn't lower the car really, but even at stock ride height it handled great and I was keeping up with B5 S4's at the track. (10vt engine in the 4k)

What's this I hear about decompression clunk on these coil over set ups? Is this really an issue?

Not if built right.
I never had an issue with 10" Springs because it at the ride Height I had them set at the spring never came unseated. I had them pre-compressed about 1-2 turns on the perch.

With 8" Springs just run a spacer/joiner and helper spring. Thats what KW, H&R and any other properly designed "system" does. I like A_CQ's thought to ziptie the spring to top perch. I imagine it would still make a little noise but would be better. Some companies also use urethane isolators on the perches to quiet them down a bit.

Wont the stock shocks wear out faster though because theyre designed for a certain hight and now theyre compressed more? I want to make my own coilovers aswell just this worries me

I think the best thing to do is to use sport shocks that are made for shorter travel.

:stupid:

If your running an adjustable setup you will be Lower & Stiffer. Both of these require new shocks. If you were just going stiffer, you'd run something like a Bilstein HD which are designed for cars that aren't lowered. Bilstein Sports/Sprints are for lowered cars and their travel is different.

That said, valving is valving to a certain extent. I've heard differing schools of thought. Some say you have to be in the sweet spot of the shock. Others say it doesn't matter, as long as your somewhere near the middle. One of the main reasons Bilstein Sports are much shorter in extended length is to keep drop in OE Replacement springs from un-seating at full droop.

I also think bottoming out is a problem as my shocks are stock and I bottom out. Probably not too long before they blow.

what would be the lowest you could go using stock shocks? without hurting other suspension parts? i drive an 88 audi 90q and would like to lower it using this set up, but want to be able to adjust my camber and alignment to specs. is this possible??
thanks!

You've got a 22 yea old car, that you want to lower and put on stiffer springs using the stock struts. Do you know if they've ever been replaced before?

That thing is going to ride like hell...

My cq rides pretty good on lowering springs and I even had to put in a cheap ass sensa track on one front corner. It definetely bottoms out though on big freeway dips and it's only a matter of time before they will be ruined. At that point I will buy some shorter travel sport shocks starting with the front.

I'm talking about aftermarket springs, not coilovers . But the point is I think I'm still about as low as you would want to go in the front because my a arms are level with the ground and My stock shocks just aren't doing it but it is driveable.
