Just wrinkle painted a valve cover and timing belt cover last night. I used the Krylon Jet Black finish that I found at Auto_zone for around $5 a can (they only had black though).

I followed Derek's directions and made the mistake of not putting on enough paint during the different coats. When the parts dried the first time, they were just black with some speckles... No wrinkles.

I think I'm just used to doing multiple light coats of normal spray paint. Anyway, luckily the directions on the can say that you can add more paint after the first layers have dried if you're not getting any wrinkle effect. I did that and it turned out just fine. In the future, I'll just have to remember to put it on pretty thick...

Next, I found some other websites that talked about this process and they recommended curing the paint in the oven set at 150 degrees. Mine didn't go down that low, so I cooked my parts at 170 F with a bowl of water in the corner of the oven (apparently humidity helps) for around 20 minutes. Worked really well...and appears to be a durable/uniform surface.

Yep... Electric stove and I live alone, so no one hassled me about using it. We'll see if the next frozen pizza tastes "Kryon-licious".

It's not wrinkle but...I use Napa black bed liner a lot. Depending on the spray distance, you can make it smooth or very coarse. No clue on whether it takes heat or not, but it takes a pounding and most solvents are ok on it.

I use it on the headlight surrounds, rockers and a few other bits.

carry on 8)

hey guys, i felt i should do something to the v8, so i grabbed a can of wrinkle paint and took some pics of it so i could give a good method of layin' it out.

materials needed-

favorite brand wrinkle paint (i use Krylon jet black)
scotchbrite or 400grit sandpaper.
masking tape
flat or low gloss black

i totaly blanked on the first prep stage, but luckily it's simple :P , just use some scortchbrite or 400grit sand paper to roughen the surface up and then wipe with some thinner or something. mask off the gasket type surfaces because the paint doesn't quite fully cure until it gets really hot, and the gaskets tend to stick to them.

after you've prepped the surface and it's nice and dry, spray a thin tack coat of the low gloss or flat black. i lay it out so that i can make sure that there is a nice flat basecoat with no fisheyes. if you've got fisheyes, start cleaning all over again :Warning: DO NOT USE SILICONE PRODUCTS AROUND PAINTING...........PERIOD!!!

the end result of this stage should look something like this...
Image

i masked the center of thi valve cover for the simple reason that i sometimes pay too much attention to details and get carried away (yellow calipers aside....i swear it was the paints fault)
Image

the next step is to lay a thin tack coat of the wrinkle paint on......
Image

the next coat will be a medium heavy coat, wait about 5-6 minutes after the first coat to lay this one on..... make sure that you do it nice and even as the wrinkle depth is directly proportionate to how thick the paint is.
Image

the third coat is medium heavy as well, don't make it run though
Image

it will stay glossy for a while until the paint starts reacting and wrinkling. it goes faster if it's warm out. comparison..
Image

here's the first one i did in the pair.
Image

it's a really durable paint and pretty much always looks good. people have been asking me tips and stuff for doing this for a long time, so here ya go, have fun!
:-)

I sorted the imagelinks so lazy ppl (like me) can look at this with ease again. If you copy it over to the first post ill delete this :-)

By the way, thanks for the writeup!

I've got the eastwood powdercoating kit, you can get powder that finishes quite similar to this.

I painted my intake mani with the high heat enamel, and because of the rough surface it looks alright. I'm not liking how glossy my valve cover came out though... thinking about doing wrinkle

This is how my valve cover came out with VHT wrinkle paint, very slight wrinkle.
